White Russian
Steven
This iconic cocktail feels indulgent and sophisticated, yet comes together in about two minutes with just three ingredients. The bold, coffee-forward bitterness of Kahlúa meets the clean warmth of vodka, and then the cream floats on top to mellow everything into something luxuriously balanced.

Rocks glass (Old Fashioned glass) - 8-10 oz capacity
Jigger or measuring tool - dual-sided with 1 oz and 2 oz measures
Spoon - long-handled bar spoon recommended
Ice tray - for large ice cubes if available
Freezer - optional, for chilling glass
- 2 oz vodka - 60ml, mid-range or premium; Absolut, Tito's, or Grey Goose
- 1 oz Kahlúa coffee liqueur - 30ml, or other coffee liqueur
- 1 oz heavy cream - 30ml, also called heavy whipping cream
- Ice cubes - large cubes preferred, or 3-4 standard cubes
- Ground coffee - optional, for garnish
- Coffee bean - optional, for garnish
Select an 8-10 oz rocks glass. Fill it halfway to three-quarters full with ice, using 3-4 standard cubes or 1-2 large cubes for slower dilution.
Using a jigger, measure out 2 oz of vodka and pour it directly over the ice. Give the glass a gentle swirl to distribute the vodka around the ice.
Measure out 1 oz of Kahlúa with the jigger and pour it over the vodka and ice. Stir the vodka and Kahlúa together at this point if you prefer the flavors fully mixed before adding the cream.
Measure out 1 oz of heavy cream. Hold a spoon face-down just above the surface of the drink and slowly pour the cream over the back of the spoon to create a clean float layer on top.
Place the glass on a coaster and serve immediately. Optionally garnish with a pinch of ground coffee or a coffee bean. Do not stir after adding the cream unless you prefer a fully blended cocktail.
- Use quality mid-range vodka for a noticeably cleaner and smoother result; avoid the cheapest options.
- Chill your rocks glass in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before building the drink to keep it colder longer.
- Always pour the cream over the back of a spoon to create a beautiful, distinct cream layer that doesn't sink immediately.
- Use cold heavy cream straight from the refrigerator for the best floating texture; room temperature cream is thinner and will sink.
- Large ice cubes or spheres melt much slower than standard cubes, keeping the drink cold without rapid dilution.
- Adjust ratios to taste: use 2.5 oz vodka for a stronger drink or add extra cream for a richer, more indulgent cocktail.
- To make a batch for parties, combine vodka and Kahlúa in a pitcher in a 2:1 ratio, store in the fridge, and pour over ice with fresh cream when serving.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute full-fat coconut cream for heavy cream — it floats beautifully and adds a subtle coconut note.
- Don't pre-mix the cream with the alcohol; cream doesn't store well and will separate or absorb odors. Always add it fresh.
- For dessert, blend all three ingredients with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to create a boozy White Russian milkshake.
