Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker with built-in strainer - A two-piece Boston shaker also works well
  • Martini glasses - 2 glasses, chilled if possible
  • Jigger or measuring tool - For accurate pours
  • Small plate or shallow dish - For coating the glass rim
  • Long bar spoon or regular spoon - For drizzling chocolate

Ingredients

  • 3 oz vodka - 90 ml, use a smooth, neutral-tasting vodka for best results
  • 2 oz chocolate liqueur - 60 ml, such as Godiva or dark Creme de Cacao
  • 1 oz Irish cream liqueur - 30 ml, such as Baileys
  • 1 oz heavy cream - 30 ml
  • ice cubes - For shaking, enough to fill the shaker halfway
  • chocolate syrup - Or chocolate sauce for rimming and garnishing the glass
  • unsweetened cocoa powder - For garnish, optional
  • maraschino cherries - 2 cherries for garnish, optional
  • chocolate shavings - For garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Chill your martini glasses in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. If short on time, fill each glass with ice water for 2-3 minutes, then discard before pouring.
  • Pour chocolate sauce onto a flat plate. Dip the rim of each chilled glass into the sauce, rotating to coat evenly. For extra elegance, dust the rim with unsweetened cocoa powder after coating.
  • Using a spoon or squeeze bottle, drizzle chocolate sauce in a spiral pattern inside each prepared glass, tilting to let it cascade down the sides. Set aside while you prepare the cocktail.
  • Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Do not use crushed ice as it melts too quickly and can dilute the drink.
  • Measure and pour 3 oz vodka, 2 oz chocolate liqueur, 1 oz Irish cream, and 1 oz heavy cream into the shaker over the ice.
  • Secure the lid firmly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the shaker feels very cold in your hands, indicating it's properly chilled and aerated.
  • Open the strainer and pour the cocktail into prepared martini glasses in a slow, steady stream, filling each about two-thirds to three-quarters full.
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry, a light dusting of cocoa powder, or chocolate shavings. Serve immediately while still cold and frothy.

Notes

  • Always use fresh ice as old or freezer-burnt ice can impart off flavors to your drink.
  • Chilling your glasses is not optional; a warm glass will warm your cocktail quickly.
  • Don't skip the cream as it adds body and rounds out the sharpness of the alcohol beautifully.
  • Shake, don't stir — shaking aerates the cream and creates the signature slightly frothy texture on top.
  • Quality chocolate liqueur makes a noticeable difference; Godiva is widely considered the gold standard.
  • For a batch, multiply the recipe and pre-mix everything except ice in a pitcher; shake individual portions to order.
  • To prevent curdling, ensure all ingredients are at similar temperatures before combining and shake immediately and vigorously.
  • For a dairy-free version, replace the heavy cream with full-fat coconut cream and use a dairy-free chocolate liqueur.
